Collection: Riot Grrrl Mona

My aim for this piece was to reimagine Mona Lisa as a Riot Grrrl, a subculture that conceptually challenges traditional notions of beauty, femininity, and societal norms. Mona Lisa, typically seen as a symbol of serene beauty and enigmatic allure, takes on a new dimension as a Riot Grrrl. Instead of passively captivating viewers with her demure smile, she now exudes a rebellious spirit, challenging the status quo and advocating for gender equality and empowerment. Therefore by placing her within the context of the Riot Grrrl movement, I am attempting to subvert expectations but also reclaiming her narrative in a way that empowers and celebrates non-conformity for women. In this reinterpretation, Mona Lisa becomes a symbol of defiance against societal norms that seek to confine women to narrow definitions of beauty and behavior. As a Riot Grrrl, she embodies the spirit of punk feminism, rejecting traditional standards and embracing authenticity, individuality, and self-expression. This piece opens up questions to the viewer on  whether a less socially conforming woman can still be as captivating?
