Collection: Proserpina, 97

During my research I discovered a shocking statistic that 97% of women in the UK between the age of 18 - 24 have experienced some form of sexual assault. My intention to shed light on this statistic greatly affecting young women was through reinterpretating "The Rape of Proserpina" by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. By incorporating elements of the Me Too Movement and using the statistic as a border in a pop art-like manner, I attempt to draw attention to the pervasive nature of sexual assault and rape culture in society."The Rape of Proserpina" depicts the mythological abduction of Proserpina by Pluto, the god of the underworld. By reappropriating this imagery and overlaying it with the phrase "Me Too" and the stark statistic of 97%, I am boldly making a  statement about the prevalence of sexual violence and the collective experiences of women. The use of pop art-like elements serves to make the message more accessible and visually impactful, drawing viewers in and encouraging them to confront the uncomfortable reality of sexual assault. By referencing both classical art and contemporary movements like Me Too, I am highlighting the timeless nature of this issue and the urgent need for societal change.
